As the name implies, the Airport Area encompasses the Riverside Municipal Airport. The City of Riverside purchased the airport in 1953. Although initial expectations were that this would become a large airport, it has remained primarily a haven for private flyers. The Airport region consists of a combination of residential, commercial and industrial areas. The houses range from modest single-family residences to ranch style and tract homes. Residents of the locality have organized into smaller associations of Neighborhood Watch Groups that provide the necessary vigilance to keep this quaint area safe and livable. Most of the land that makes up the Airport neighborhood is part of the original 53 square miles of the City. Small, western portions were annexed between 1955 and 1961. The area today characterizes a modern subdivision, with uniquely shaped residential blocks. The heart of the Airport neighborhood is Riverside Airport, which serves private flyers but has not matured into a general use public airport. Only the eastern corner of this neighborhood is actually devoted to residential blocks. This region features city blocks of a more traditional grid design, but topography and modern development have mixed in some uniquely shaped blocks. Airport also plays host to a large concentration of industry, much of which is aircraft oriented. This portion of the neighborhood lies within a Redevelopment Project Area. The Santa Ana River forms the northern border of this neighborhood and much of the area is favored by panoramic views over the river to the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.
